Do you need SEBI registration to run a stock tips Telegram channel?
If the channel issues research analysis on listed securities, the route is Research Analyst registration. General market commentary is outside the definition. The test is what each post says.

A Telegram channel that issues research reports or research analysis on securities listed on an exchange falls under the SEBI Research Analyst regulations, and the route is registration as a research analyst (research advisor). General commentary on markets and indices sits outside the definition.
Research report or advice
Investment advice under the IA regulations is personalised to a client. A post to a channel of strangers is not personalised, so the Investment Adviser registration is not the one that fits. What a channel publishes to everyone who reads it is research analysis, and that is the Research Analyst activity.
What SEBI leaves out of a research report
- Comments on general market trends.
- Discussions on broad-based indices.
- Commentary on economic, political or market conditions.
- Statistical summaries of company financial data.
- Technical analyses of demand and supply in a sector or index.
Note
Technical analysis as a method is not exempt. A chart-based view on a named stock is read against the definition like any other view on it.
Trading calls
SEBI's IA FAQ says intraday, ultra-short duration, non-delivery based and non-personalised calls are not investment advice under the IA regulations. That answers one question: IA registration does not cover them. It does not turn a channel full of named-stock calls into market commentary.
What registration looks like for a channel
You apply to BSE Limited as RAASB in Form A, hold NISM Series XV, keep a deposit in a scheduled bank (₹1 lakh up to 150 clients) and follow the trading restrictions in regulation 16. SEBI's fees for an individual are ₹2,000 on application and ₹3,000 on registration. If you run the channel next to a job unrelated to securities, part-time registration exists.
If you run a channel and want to know where your posts land, send us a week of them. We read them against SEBI's list and, if registration is the right step, we handle the documentation and filing.

Investment Adviser or Research Analyst: which one covers what you actually do
The line is not seniority or scale. It is whether you are advising a specific client on their situation, or publishing a recommendation to whoever reads it.

Can a SEBI investment adviser give trading calls?
No. SEBI's IA FAQ says intraday, ultra-short duration, non-delivery based and non-personalised calls are not investment advice under the IA regulations, so the registration does not authorise them.
