DPIIT Recognition via NSWS: Step-by-Step 2026 Process

A common misconception: DPIIT Startup Recognition is not applied for directly on startupindia.gov.in. Since 2021, applications are filed through the National Single Window System (NSWS, nsws.gov.in) under the "Registration as a Startup" approval. startupindia.gov.in remains the hub for your certificate, benefits access, and Inter-Ministerial Board (IMB) matters after recognition — but the application itself routes through NSWS.
If you've read older guides or blog posts that describe filling out a recognition form directly on startupindia.gov.in, that description is out of date. Here's the current, correct process as it runs through NSWS.
Step 1: Register on NSWS
Create an account on the National Single Window System at nsws.gov.in. NSWS is a whole-of-government portal that consolidates approvals across multiple ministries and departments — DPIIT Startup Recognition is one of the approvals available on it, listed under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Step 2: Add the "Registration as a Startup" Approval
Within your NSWS dashboard, locate and add the DPIIT "Registration as a Startup" approval to your application queue. This is the specific approval that maps to DPIIT recognition — NSWS hosts many unrelated approvals for other licenses and registrations, so make sure you're selecting the right one.
Step 3: Fill the Application Form
The form asks for your entity details: incorporation date and entity type, CIN (for companies) or LLPIN (for LLPs), PAN, GSTIN (if registered), registered office address, and the names of directors or partners. You'll also need a written description of your business — this is where your innovation/scalability declaration (covered in our eligibility article) is captured in narrative form.
