GST Registration for Amazon, Flipkart & Meesho Sellers
Need help with gst? We can handle it for you.
A lot of first-time sellers assume GST only kicks in once they're doing real volume. On a marketplace, that assumption is wrong from day one.
Yes. If you sell through Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, or any e-commerce marketplace, GST registration is mandatory regardless of your turnover. Section 24 of the CGST Act classifies e-commerce sellers as a compulsory-registration category, unlike offline sellers who only register after crossing the ₹40 lakh or ₹20 lakh threshold. Marketplaces require a valid GSTIN before they will activate your seller account.
Why marketplace sellers can't skip GST registration
Our state-wise threshold guide covers the ₹40 lakh and ₹20 lakh limits that apply to most businesses. That guide doesn't apply to you. Section 24 of the CGST Act overrides the turnover threshold entirely for certain categories of supplier, and selling through an e-commerce operator is one of them. Whether you sold ten units last month or ten thousand, the requirement is the same.
Section 24: why e-commerce sellers are a mandatory category
Section 24 lists several categories that must register irrespective of turnover: inter-state suppliers, casual taxable persons, anyone liable under reverse charge, e-commerce operators required to collect tax at source, and sellers who supply goods or services through such an operator. Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho are all e-commerce operators under this definition, and that pulls every seller transacting through them into the same mandatory bracket as the operators themselves.
The narrow exception, and why we're not calling it a rule
A small carve-out exists for sellers of certain notified goods, including some handicraft categories, selling below the general threshold. We're deliberately not stating a specific cutoff or goods list here, because the notified-goods list gets updated and secondary sources disagree on the current scope. If you think your product might qualify, verify the current notification before you rely on it, or treat registration as the default and skip the guesswork.
