A non-bank lender is not resolving my complaint. Can I go to the RBI Ombudsman?
Usually, yes. Complain to the NBFC first, in writing. If 30 days pass with no reply, or the reply does not satisfy you, the RBI Ombudsman takes the complaint under the Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, filed within 90 days after that on cms.rbi.org.in. It is free.
The Scheme covers NBFCs registered with RBI that either accept deposits or deal with customers and have assets of ₹100 crore or more. Housing finance companies, core investment companies, IDF-NBFCs, NBFC-IFCs, NOFHCs, primary dealers and mortgage guarantee companies are left out. RBI says a complaint against an entity outside the Scheme may go to its other grievance arrangements, including the Consumer Education and Protection Cells.
The Ombudsman can award consequential loss up to ₹30 lakh, plus up to ₹3 lakh for time, expenses and harassment. A matter already before a court or another forum is not taken.
The route checker gives your filing dates from the day you complained and the NBFC's answer.

Common questions
Is a housing finance company covered?
No. RBI's FAQ on the 2026 Scheme leaves housing finance companies out.
What about a wrong entry on my credit report?
Disputes about credit information have their own correction timeline with the lender and the credit bureau. The route checker covers that too.
