What is the fee to file a consumer complaint?
The fee depends on what you paid for the product or service. The compensation you claim does not change it. Up to ₹5 lakh paid, the filing fee is nil. Above that it is ₹200 up to ₹10 lakh, ₹400 up to ₹20 lakh and ₹1,000 up to ₹50 lakh. These amounts go to the District Commission, which hears complaints where you paid up to ₹50 lakh.
Above ₹50 lakh and up to ₹2 crore the State Commission hears the complaint, at ₹2,000 up to ₹1 crore and ₹2,500 up to ₹2 crore. Above ₹2 crore the National Commission hears it: ₹3,000 up to ₹4 crore, ₹4,000 up to ₹6 crore, ₹5,000 up to ₹8 crore, ₹6,000 up to ₹10 crore and ₹7,500 above that.
The fee table is in rule 7(2) of the Consumer Protection (Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions) Rules, 2020, as amended on 17 August 2023. The limits for each commission come from a separate set of rules dated 30 December 2021. The Supreme Court has asked the Union to explain those limits, and they stand until changed.
