What Documents Does a Bank Actually Need to Open a Proprietorship Current Account
Need help with current account? We can handle it for you.
You've worked out there's no single proprietorship registration certificate to hand over. That's covered in why there's no single filing. The bank still needs something before it opens a current account in your business name. Here's exactly what.
Under RBI's KYC Master Direction, a bank opening a current account for a sole proprietorship normally asks for identity and address proof of the proprietor plus two documents from an illustrative activity-proof list, most commonly a GST certificate, a Shops & Establishment certificate, an Udyam certificate, an IEC certificate, or a professional practice licence. RBI has since allowed banks discretion to accept a single such document plus mandatory contact-point verification where a genuine second document isn't available. Which combination a branch actually insists on varies, so getting at least one of GST, Shops & Establishment, or Udyam done before applying is the reliable path.
The RBI baseline rule
RBI's Master Direction on KYC sets the floor every bank works from. A proprietary concern must furnish identity and address proof of the proprietor, and separately, activity proof for the business itself. Identity proof is the easy part. Activity proof is where most first-time proprietors get stuck, because they haven't yet filed anything that names the business.
The two-document rule, and the one-document exception
The original rule under paragraph 2.5(h) of RBI's KYC circular asks for any two documents from an illustrative activity-proof list. RBI later relaxed this: a bank can accept a single document from that list, provided it also carries out contact-point verification, in cases where a genuine second document can't reasonably be produced. The relaxation exists. It's discretionary, and a branch is not obliged to use it just because you ask.
What counts as activity proof in practice
- GST registration certificate
- Shops & Establishment registration certificate
- Udyam (MSME) registration certificate
- IEC certificate, if you trade internationally
- A professional practice certificate, for CAs, CS, doctors and similar regulated practices
- Sales tax, income tax or CST/VAT/GST returns, where applicable
