"MSME registration," "Udyam registration," and "Udyog Aadhaar registration" are not three different systems — they're the same underlying government recognition at three different points in its history. If you're registering today, "Udyam Registration" is the only current, correct term.
This naming confusion is one of the most common sources of stale advice online — pages written before 2020 still reference "Udyog Aadhaar," and older ones reference plain "MSME registration," without flagging that the system has since moved on. Here's the actual timeline.

Why This Matters: Old Certificates Aren't Valid Anymore
Udyog Aadhaar certificates are no longer valid as MSME proof. If you registered under Udyog Aadhaar (2015-2020) or the older state-level EM-II system, you need to move to a current Udyam Registration Number through a re-registration/migration flow — not simply keep using your old certificate.
