Udyam Certificate Lifecycle: Update, Correction, Re-registration, and Udyog Aadhaar Migration
Need help with msme? We can handle it for you.
Not every change to your business requires a fresh Udyam registration. Editing details like address, activity, or investment/turnover figures on an existing URN is a free, self-serve "Update." Legacy Udyog Aadhaar or state-level EM-II holders use a separate "Re-registration"/assisted migration flow to get a current Udyam URN. And crossing a classification threshold reclassifies your business automatically — no manual filing required.
Founders searching for "how to update Udyam registration" or "do I need to re-register" are usually in one of three situations. Here's how to tell which one applies to you.
Situation 1: You Already Have a Current Udyam URN and Details Changed
Editing details on an already-issued Udyam certificate — address, business activity, or manually updating investment/turnover figures — is a self-serve "Update" action on the official portal. It's free, and it retains the same URN; you don't get a new registration number, and any name/state/entity-type change that requires a structural correction is handled within this same update mechanism rather than starting a fresh registration from scratch.
Situation 2: You Hold an Old Udyog Aadhaar or EM-II Registration
If you registered under Udyog Aadhaar (2015-2020) or the older state-level EM-II system (pre-2015), your old certificate is no longer valid as MSME proof. You need a distinct "Re-registration"/assisted migration flow on the current Udyam portal to get a fresh Udyam URN — this is not the same action as an "Update" on an existing Udyam certificate, since you don't have one yet.
Situation 3: Your Investment or Turnover Crossed a Classification Threshold
This is the one founders most often get wrong: crossing a classification threshold (moving from Micro to Small, for example) does NOT require you to manually re-register or file anything. The portal auto-fetches your PAN-linked ITR data and GSTIN-linked GST return data annually and reclassifies your enterprise automatically if you've crossed a threshold — there's no manual renewal step and no founder action needed to trigger this. If you see guidance suggesting you must "re-register" purely because your turnover grew, that's incorrect for a straightforward threshold crossing; it applies to the Udyog Aadhaar migration scenario above, not to an existing, current Udyam URN.

Legal basis
Udyam Registration — definition
The current (since 1 July 2020), sole official, fee-free, self-declaration-based government registration for micro/small/medium enterprises, obtained on udyamregistration.gov.in.
"MSME registration" vs "Udyam registration" vs "Udyog Aadhaar" — naming history, not three different schemes
All three names refer to sequential stages of the same evolving government registration regime; only Udyam Registration is currently valid, and Udyog Aadhaar certificates are no longer accepted as proof.
Udyam classification thresholds (2025) — mechanics founders need to know
The composite investment+turnover test, the asymmetric upgrade/downgrade rule, the export-turnover exclusion, and the auto-fetch mechanism that removes self-reporting from classification.
Udyam registration process — self-declaration model, entity-type variable, and timing
A 5–10 minute, document-free, self-declaration process on the sole official portal; the only thing that varies by entity type is whose Aadhaar is used.

Udyam Registration Eligibility and Classification: The 2025 Limits
The exact, current (1 April 2025) investment and turnover thresholds for Micro, Small, and Medium classification under Udyam Registration — Micro ₹2.5cr/₹10cr, Small ₹25cr/₹100cr, Medium ₹125cr/₹500cr — plus how the composite criterion, upgrade/downgrade rules, and export-turnover exclusion work, with the superseded 2020 figures clearly labeled historical.
MSME vs Udyam vs Udyog Aadhaar: Same Regime, Different Names
"MSME registration," "Udyam registration," and "Udyog Aadhaar registration" all refer to the same evolving government regime, not three different systems. Here's the timeline — pre-2015 state-level registration, 2015-2020 Udyog Aadhaar, 2020-present Udyam — and why old Udyog Aadhaar certificates no longer count as proof.
What Is Udyam Registration and Do You Need It?
Udyam Registration is the free, self-declared government registration that recognises a business as an MSME — unlocking tender set-asides, collateral-free lending routes, and IP fee rebates. It is not mandatory to operate a business, but most founders register early because the downside is zero and the upside compounds.
